About Lumphini Park Bangkok
Bangkok's beloved urban oasis — 142 acres of lakes, lush lawns, wild monitor lizards, paddle boats, and morning Tai Chi in the heart of the city. Completely free entry.
Lumphini Park (สวนลุมพินี) is Bangkok's largest and most cherished public park — a magnificent 57.6-hectare (142-acre) green sanctuary surrounded by the gleaming skyscrapers of Silom, Sathorn, and Ratchadamri. Named after Lumbini in Nepal, the birthplace of the Buddha, the park was gifted to the Thai people by King Rama VI in 1925. 🦎 Wild Monitor Lizards One of the park's most extraordinary features is its thriving population of wild Malayan water monitors (Varanus salvator) — some exceeding 2 metres in length. These prehistoric-looking creatures roam freely around the lake shore and pathways, completely unfazed by visitors. A truly unique urban wildlife experience. 🏞️ The Central Lake The park's large central lake is the heart of the experience. Paddle boats and swan boats are available for hire (฿40 per 30 minutes) and offer a wonderful perspective of Bangkok's skyline rising above the treetops.
Early mornings (5am–8am) are the park's most magical hours. Groups of Thai residents gather under the trees for Tai Chi, aerobics, line dancing, traditional Chinese sword exercises, and group jogging — a deeply local slice of Bangkok daily life that most tourists never see. 🎵 Weekend Concerts The Royal Thai Army Band performs free outdoor concerts on weekend evenings near the main pavilion. 🚴 Cycling & Fitness The park features well-maintained jogging and cycling paths circling the perimeter (~2.5km per loop). Bicycle hire is available inside the park (฿20 per hour). Cycling is permitted between 10am–3pm only. Outdoor fitness equipment stations are free to use throughout the park.
The park is easily reached by MRT (Lumphini Station or Si Lom Station) or BTS (Sala Daeng Station). Entrances are located on Rama IV Road, Ratchadamri Road, and Witthayu Road.
Best Time to Visit
Open daily 4:30am–10:00pm. Early morning 5am–8am is the most atmospheric — watch locals practise Tai Chi, aerobics, and jogging as the city wakes up. Evenings (after 6pm) are cooler and perfect for a lakeside stroll.
