About Erawan Museum Bangkok

2h visitFamily Friendly

Marvel at one of Thailand's most extraordinary structures — a colossal 29-metre, 250-tonne three-headed bronze elephant perched atop an ornate dome, housing a breathtaking collection of Hindu-Buddhist art and antiques in Samut Prakan.

The Erawan Museum (พิพิธภัณฑ์ช้างเอราวัณ) in Samut Prakan — just 30 minutes south of central Bangkok — is one of Thailand's most visually stunning and spiritually rich attractions. Its centrepiece is a colossal three-headed bronze elephant (Erawan, the mythical mount of the Hindu god Indra) standing 29 metres tall and weighing 250 tonnes, mounted atop a beautifully ornate European-style domed building. 🐘 The Three-Headed Elephant The Erawan elephant's three heads represent the three realms of Thai-Hindu cosmology — Heaven, Earth, and the Underworld. Visitors can ascend via a spiral staircase inside the building into the elephant's belly, offering a unique perspective of the structure from within. 🏛️ Three Floors of Art & Mythology The building is divided into three symbolic floors:

  • Underworld (Ground Floor): Ancient antiques, religious relics, Chinese porcelain, and Buddhist artifacts collected by Thai philanthropist Lek Viriyaphan.
  • Earth (Middle Floor): Stunning displays of Thai and Southeast Asian cultural heritage.
  • Heaven (Top Floor / Inside the Elephant): A breathtaking stained-glass dome ceiling depicting Hindu and Buddhist cosmological scenes — one of the most beautiful interiors in all of Thailand.

The museum is set within beautifully maintained tropical gardens with ornate fountains, statues, and flowering plants — making the approach to the elephant a memorable experience in itself.
