Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew

The Grand Palace is the heart of Bangkok and Thailand's most visited attraction. Built in 1782 by King Rama I, this magnificent complex spans 218,000 square metres and served as the official residence of Thai kings for 150 years. The complex includes the Royal Residence halls with their distinctive multi-tiered roofs, the stunning Throne Hall, and most importantly — Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. The Emerald Buddha is a 66cm jade statue draped in golden robes that are changed by the King himself three times a year. The temple walls are lined with a 178-panel mural depicting the Ramayana epic. Outside, the mythical golden Garuda statues stand guard. The complex also houses the Pavilion of Regalia, Royal Decorations and Coins Exhibition, and the Throne Hall Museum. Dress code strictly enforced — no shorts or sleeveless tops allowed.
