About Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon
A grand and deeply spiritual temple dominated by an enormous chedi stupa, surrounded by rows of saffron-robed Buddha statues in a beautifully maintained and serene garden setting.
Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon is one of the most impressive and spiritually atmospheric temples in Ayutthaya. Founded in 1357 by King Ramathibodi I as a meditation monastery for monks returning from ordination in Sri Lanka, the temple's defining feature is its massive bell-shaped chedi — one of the tallest in Ayutthaya — built to commemorate King Naresuan's famous single-combat elephant duel victory over the Burmese crown prince in 1593. The chedi is surrounded by a beautiful garden of Buddha statues draped in saffron robes, creating a serene and photogenic scene. Unlike the purely ruined temples of the historical park, Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon is still an active place of worship with resident monks, adding an authentic spiritual dimension to the visit.
