Wat Phanan Choeng – Giant Golden Buddha

Wat Phanan Choeng is one of the most significant and atmospheric temples in Ayutthaya, pre-dating the founding of the city itself — it was built in 1324, 27 years before Ayutthaya became a capital. The temple's centrepiece is the awe-inspiring Luang Pho Tho, a 19-metre-tall seated Buddha image covered in gold leaf that fills the entire bot (ordination hall) with its presence. The statue's sheer scale and golden radiance, combined with the smoke of hundreds of incense sticks and the chanting of devotees, creates an overwhelmingly powerful spiritual atmosphere. The temple is particularly revered among Thai Chinese communities and comes alive during Chinese New Year with extraordinary celebrations. It sits on the Chao Phraya riverbank, accessible by a short boat ride.
