🏔️ ABOUT WAT PHRA THAT DOI SUTHEP Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is the most revered temple in northern Thailand and the spiritual heart of Chiang Mai. Sitting atop Doi Suthep mountain at 1,676 metres above sea level, it has been a place of Buddhist pilgrimage for over 600 years. 📖 THE LEGEND According to legend, a sacred relic of the Buddha was placed on the back of a white elephant in 1383. The elephant was set free to choose the temple site — it climbed the mountain, trumpeted three times, turned in a circle, and died. King Kuena ordered a temple to be built on that spot, and it has been expanded and embellished ever since. ✨ WHAT TO SEE
- The golden chedi (stupa) is 22 metres tall, covered in gleaming copper-plated bronze, and enshrines a Buddha relic inside. Worshippers walk clockwise around it leaving offerings and ringing bells.
- The 309-step Naga Staircase — flanked by magnificent multi-headed serpent (naga) balustrades — leads from the road to the temple entrance. It is one of the most photographed approaches of any Thai temple.
- Cable car (funicular) — for those who prefer not to climb, a ฿50 cable car runs from the car park to the entrance.
- Temple complex — includes shrines, monk cells, wishing bells, a royal pavilion, and a museum with artifacts about the temple's history.
- Panoramic viewpoint — from the terrace, views over Chiang Mai city and the valley below are extraordinary, especially at sunrise and in cool-season mornings.
