About Wat Chalong Temple Phuket

1.5h visit12 km from cityTaxi ~฿300Family Friendly

Phuket's largest and most revered Buddhist temple complex, home to the magnificent 60-metre Phra Mahathat Chedi housing a sacred Buddha bone relic. FREE entry. Open 9am–5pm.

Wat Chalong (วัดฉลอง), officially known as Chalong Temple, stands as Phuket's most important and beautifully adorned Buddhist monastery. Founded in the 19th century, it attracts thousands of devotees and visitors daily who come to pay respects to the revered monks Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang, whose wax effigies are displayed in the main sala. 🏛️ The Temple Complex

🙏 Cultural Significance Wat Chalong played a pivotal role in the 1876 Chinese coolie rebellion, when Luang Pho Chaem provided medicinal aid and spiritual guidance to the injured. The temple is considered the most spiritually powerful in Phuket — locals believe visiting all 29 temples on the island brings good fortune, with Wat Chalong as the final and most important stop. 👗 Dress Code Modest attire required: covered shoulders and knees. Sarongs available to borrow free at the entrance.

  • Phra Mahathat Chedi (พระมหาธาตุเจดีย์): The stunning 60-metre white pagoda is the complex's crown jewel. Completed in 2008, it houses a sacred bone relic of Lord Buddha brought from Sri Lanka. Climb the spiral staircase for panoramic views of Chalong Bay and the surrounding hills.
  • Main Wihan (Sermon Hall): Houses the lifelike wax figures of the two most revered monks, draped in golden robes. Devotees offer incense, flowers, and prayers for blessings.
  • Ordination Hall (Ubosot): The most sacred building, reserved for monk ordinations. Features exquisite murals depicting Buddha's life.
  • Wooden Teak Buildings: Traditional Lanna-style architecture with intricate carvings.
  • Fortune Telling Stalls: Traditional Thai fortune-telling using bamboo sticks and numbered interpretations (฿20–50 per reading).
  • Monk Chat Areas: Opportunity to speak with resident monks (donations appreciated).
