About Wat Chaiwatthanaram
Ayutthaya's most dramatic and romantic temple — a Khmer-inspired masterpiece on the Chao Phraya riverbank that transforms into a breathtaking silhouette at sunset.
Wat Chaiwatthanaram is widely considered the most visually spectacular temple in Ayutthaya, and its riverside setting makes it uniquely photogenic at any time of day. Built in 1630 by King Prasat Thong to honour his mother, the temple is modelled on the great Khmer temples of Angkor with a central prang tower flanked by four corner towers and a surrounding gallery of headless Buddha statues. The temple's position on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River means that at sunset, the entire complex is lit in extraordinary golden light as the sun drops behind it, creating one of the most dramatic silhouette photographs in Thailand. Evening illuminations (Friday–Sunday) add to the magic. A short boat ride from the main historical park adds to the romantic adventure.
