Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn)

Wat Arun Ratchawararam (วัดอรุณราชวราราม) — the Temple of Dawn — is one of Bangkok's most iconic and recognisable landmarks, rising 82 metres from the western bank of the Chao Phraya River. The temple's towering central prang (Khmer-style spire) is uniquely decorated with millions of fragments of Chinese porcelain and coloured glass, which shimmer brilliantly in the morning and evening light, creating the distinctive mosaic effect that makes Wat Arun instantly recognisable. The temple dates to the Ayutthaya period (17th century) and was significantly expanded by King Rama II and King Rama III in the early 19th century. At its heart are four smaller prangs surrounding the main tower, each decorated with figurines of Indra riding Erawan (the three-headed elephant). The steep stairs of the central prang can be climbed for panoramic views across the Chao Phraya to Wat Pho and the Grand Palace on the opposite bank. The official entry ticket for foreign visitors is ฿100 (children under 120cm free). The temple is reached by a short 3-minute ferry crossing from Tha Tien Pier (Pier 8) for just ฿4 each way — itself a memorable experience on Bangkok's busy river. The best time to visit is at sunrise (6am–8am) when the golden light hits the porcelain mosaics, or at sunset (5pm–6:30pm) when the temple glows amber against the sky.
