About Wat Arun – Temple of Dawn

2h visitFamily Friendly

One of Bangkok's most iconic landmarks — a breathtaking 70-metre Khmer-style prang tower rising from the Chao Phraya riverbank, encrusted with millions of colourful Chinese porcelain fragments. Most spectacular at sunset.

Wat Arun Ratchawararam — the Temple of Dawn — is undoubtedly Bangkok's most photogenic and beloved landmark. Standing 70 metres tall on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River in the Thonburi district, its towering central prang (spire) is encrusted with millions of pieces of colourful Chinese porcelain and seashells donated by local devotees, creating a dazzling mosaic that shimmers brilliantly in the sunlight. 🏛️ **History:** The temple dates back to the Ayutthaya period (17th century) and was significantly expanded and restored during the reign of King Rama II and King Rama III. It served as the royal chapel of Thonburi when it was briefly Thailand's capital. The name "Arun" refers to Aruna, the Hindu god of dawn, as King Taksin is said to have arrived here at sunrise. 🌟 **What to See & Do:**

  • **Climb the Central Prang** — steep stairs lead up to the terrace offering panoramic views of the Chao Phraya River, Wat Pho, and the Grand Palace across the river
  • **Porcelain Mosaic Details** — examine the incredibly intricate floral and mythological patterns made entirely from broken Chinese porcelain
  • **Four Satellite Prangs** — equally ornate smaller towers at each corner of the terrace
  • **Ordination Hall (Ubosot)** — houses a beautiful Buddha image said to have been created by King Rama II himself
  • **Chinese Guardian Statues** — stone Chinese soldier and demon figures throughout the grounds
  • **River Views** — the riverbank walkway offers stunning views back toward the Grand Palace
