About Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Temple
Chiang Mai's most sacred and iconic temple — a gleaming golden chedi perched at 1,676m on Doi Suthep mountain, founded in 1383 and offering breathtaking panoramic views over the entire city.
🌟 OVERVIEW Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is unquestionably the most revered and visited temple in northern Thailand. Locals say: 'If you haven't been to Doi Suthep, you haven't been to Chiang Mai.' Founded in the 14th century (1383) by King Ku Na of the Lanna Kingdom, the temple sits majestically at 1,676 metres elevation on Doi Suthep mountain, just 11km from Chiang Mai city. 🏛️ THE LEGEND OF THE WHITE ELEPHANT According to ancient legend, a monk placed sacred Buddha relics (fragments of bone from the Buddha's shoulder) on the back of a white elephant. The elephant wandered into the jungle, climbed Doi Suthep mountain, trumpeted three times, turned around three times, then collapsed — marking the sacred spot where the temple was to be built. The golden chedi was constructed to enshrine these holy relics and has stood for over 600 years. 🏯 WHAT TO SEE
