🏛️ CHIANG RAI DAY TRIP OVERVIEW Chiang Rai is located about 3 hours north of Chiang Mai and is home to some of Thailand's most architecturally unique and visually stunning landmarks. This full-day tour covers three remarkable sites in one unforgettable day. ⛩️ WAT RONG KHUN – THE WHITE TEMPLE Thailand's most photographed contemporary temple, designed and built by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat starting in 1997 and still under construction today. The entire structure is covered in white plaster embedded with millions of tiny mirror mosaic pieces that shimmer in the sunlight — symbolising the purity of the Buddha. The bridge entrance crosses over a pool filled with hundreds of outstretched hands, representing those trapped in the cycle of suffering. Inside, the murals are extraordinary — blending traditional Buddhist imagery with pop culture references including superheroes, astronauts and movie characters. The grounds also include a golden building (the toilet block) and a museum of the artist's work. 🔵 WAT RONG SUEA TEN – THE BLUE TEMPLE A newer temple completed in 2016, with electric-blue interiors, towering white Buddha images, and intricate naga serpent decorations around the roof. Far less crowded than the White Temple, it is a strikingly beautiful example of contemporary Thai Buddhist architecture. 🖤 BAAN DAM – THE BLACK HOUSE (BAANDAM MUSEUM) The eccentric life-work of artist Thawan Duchanee — a collection of 40 dark teak wood structures filled with crocodile skins, animal skulls, snake skins, and antique Thai furniture. A dark, provocative contrast to the white and blue temples. Set in beautiful forested grounds.
